Hiking Mount Pelée & The Pitons du Carbet: UNESCO Trails & Safety
Designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2023, the volcanic complex of Mount Pelée and the Pitons du Carbet constitutes the wild green heart of Martinique.
1. The Aileron Ascent Trail
- Starting Point: Le Premier Refuge parking lot (elevation 824m) near Le Morne-Rouge.
- Duration: 4 to 5 hours round-trip.
- Elevation Gain: ~600 meters of vertical ascent over volcanic rock steps.
- Features: Hiking across the crater rim (Caldeira) and reaching the highest dome (Le Chinois, 1,397m) with sweeping views of both Atlantic and Caribbean waters on clear mornings.
2. Canal des Esclaves (Canal de Beauregard)
A historic aqueduct path clinging to cliff edges above the Carbet river valley, offering a gentle yet thrilling walk surrounded by lush rainforest canopy.
3. Preparation & Mountain Safety
- Early Departure: Start your ascent before 7:30 AM to beat the mid-morning summit clouds.
- Gear: Trail shoes with high traction, waterproof windbreaker, sun protection, and at least 2 liters of hydration.
